The Gamma Upsilon Chapter of Sigma Chi celebrated its 70th Anniversary during the weekend of April 18th-20th, 2008. Attendance estimates for the weekend have been placed over 700, a number which includes the over 250 alumni and their families and over 160 undergraduates and their dates. All gathered to look back over the 70 years of significance that Gamma Upsilon has had at Mississippi State. From its beginnings through the George Riffles to now, Gamma Upsilon has accomplished much over the years with the chapter and its members winning countless awards, serving the community in a wide range of capacities, and giving millions of dollars to charity. Additionally, these accomplishments have not just been undergraduate achievements as many Gamma Upsilon alumni serve or have served their communities and this country proudly over the past seven decades.

As for the event itself, alumni and undergraduates enjoyed several events which allowed stories to be told and memories to be shared. The weekend kicked off with a Friday night low-key gathering at Doe's in downtown Starkville where Gamma Upsilon members and their dates shared conversation over cocktails and hors d' oeuvres. On Saturday, undergraduates proudly provided tours of the chapter facilities, showing off the incredible investments that have been made in the chapter grounds over the past decade. Following house tours, alums, their families, and undergraduates fellowshipped over a grand luncheon at the Palmeiro Center which included speakers and an awards presentation. After this luncheon, the alumni present and the entire undergraduate chapter held a one-of-a-kind ritual ceremony. This event was truly special as the moment was not only shared between generations of Sigma Chis but also between fathers, sons, grandfathers, uncles, and cousins. The luncheon and ritual ceremony was also attended by the original Consul of Gamma Upsilon.
To conclude the event, alums, undergraduates and dates piled into the State Theater in Downtown Starkville for an evening of live entertainment. This gala was truly special as the event went on for hours, finally being closed down after 1am. During the last song, James McRenyolds, jr., grandfather of current active Ross Rackley and recent graduate Cal Rackley, and his wife were still churning their feet to the music.

Overall, the 70th anniversary has been declared by all to have been a huge success. Countless alumni were quoted as to when the 71st anniversary was going to be! The undergraduate chapter and their dates also agreed that the event was, by far, the best event of the year--and this is coming from groups who attend countless formals/events throughout the college year.
In conclusion, we at Gamma Upsilon look forward to the next 70 years during which we can only imagine the greatness that will be produced from those who wear the white cross of Sigma Chi and Gamma Upsilon. We also look forward to hosting the next event, definitely a 75th, but quite possibly several between now and then!
Much thanks again to all of those who attended the 70th Anniversary Celebration of Gamma Upsilon and to those who helped to make it such a success, especially the Gamma Upsilon 70th Anniversary Planning Committee, Kane and Wade Overstreet, the Gamma Upsilon SigMA club, and the Gamma Upsilon House Corporation. We hope that everyone enjoyed themselves, and we hope that we may all keep in touch as we continue the legacy as members of Gamma Upsilon and of the great Bulldog Nation!!

The Gamma Upsilon Chapter will be hosting a 70th Anniversary celebration on the weekend of April 18th-20th 2008. This event should prove to be well worth the trip back to Starkville and Mississippi State. We are encouraging all alumni, their wives, and families to attend this celebration. We also especially encourage those who have not visited Sigma Chi or Mississippi State in a few years to attend this event. You all will be truly amazed at the improvements that have been made to campus and the chapter grounds.
All alumni with updated addresses should have received a letter providing more details on our 70th Anniversary celebration. However, if you did not, it can be accessed via the link below.
